October 11th, 2:00pm – 3:30pm ET – Student Privacy Introduction

November 9th, 2:00pm – 3:30pm EST – Protecting Student Privacy

This module provides an overview of federal student privacy laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Student Rights Protection Amendment (PPRA), and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Compare and contrast each law’s purpose, target audience, and enforcement mechanisms, and explore how the law impacts the day-to-day operations of educational institutions.

December 14th, 2:00pm – 3:30pm EST – Protecting Student Privacy

This module covers important categories of data and data sharing. Compare and contrast direct and indirect identifiers, sensitive and non-sensitive data, identifiable and de-identified data, and individual-level data and aggregated data. Participants will develop stakeholder communications to explain the types of data, its uses, and the necessary protections.

January 11th, 2:00pm – 3:30pm EST – Data Sharing and Third Party Management

This module covers the use of edtech tools. We also explore existing resources that help educators evaluate tools and methods to help them select edtech tools. Participants will develop guidance for teachers in adopting and using educational technology tools to add to their portfolios. This module focuses on formal school exceptions and data sharing agreements. Learn how to evaluate edtech tools for compliance with federal laws and best practices. We also assess best practices in drafting data sharing agreements and determine what data sharing elements are required and recommended. Participants create template data sharing agreements and add them to their portfolios.

February 8th, 2:00pm – 3:30pm EST – Establishing data governance

This module draws the relationship between privacy and data governance. Review the elements of data governance and explore model policies and practices. Participants will use these exemplars to construct an action plan.

March 14th, 2:00pm – 3:30pm EST – Sharing data with researchers and law enforcement

April 11th 2:00pm – 3:30pm ET – Protecting data security (part 1)

This module covers both physical and logical data security at a high level. It provides an overview of the actual and potential risks of data security breaches and reviews policies and procedures that are considered best practices for protecting student data. Participants will incorporate elements that address data security into their action plans and portfolios.

May 9, 2:00pm – 3:30pm ET – Protecting Data Security (Part 2)

Transparency is critical to building trust. This module explains what transparency is, explores its benefits, and considers model strategies for building transparency and trust with stakeholders. Participants will assess the level of need for transparency in their environment and develop concrete steps to address transparency in their action plans.

June 12th – 2:00pm – 3:30pm ET Closing Workshop and Student Action Plan Presentation
